Dorothy Thayne is a multidisciplinary artist based in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She explores the interplay of light, texture, emotion and spirit across a variety of mediums, including oil, egg tempera, ink, and pastel.
Her paintings reflect a deep appreciation for traditional techniques and contemporary perspectives, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty in her surroundings. She creates evocative pieces that invite viewers into a world of layered narratives and timeless expression. Thayne’s fluid style shifts between observation and spontaneity, vibrant color and subtly graded black and white, always seeking to reveal the divine within the material world.
Thayne’s icons are painted in the Byzantine style using materials of the highest quality, including gold leaf, natural and historic pigments bound with the yolk of an egg -- on a base of poplar wood covered with a gesso of chalk and marble dust. The paint is applied in many layers resulting in a translucency that gives the icon a quality of inner light.
She is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and holds an MFA from Rutgers University. She has exhibited her work in the areas where she has lived with her husband and three children. Her icons are installed in church and monastic settings in Georgia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
